Rules

Welcome to the 2012/13 T and F fantasy football league. We’re trying a new system this year, with the auction replaced by a draft, the introduction of a salary cap, (almost) full season trading, and the ability to manage your team into 2013/14 and beyond. Below, you’ll find the new season’s rules, split across the following sections:
1. The Draft
2. Salary Cap
3. Your Team
4. Trading and Free Agents
5. Fees and Prizes
6. The Close Season and New League Year
Section 1: The Draft
  • A full list of draft eligible players and their salaries will be sent to each team manager in advance of the draft.
  • A draw will be conducted to determine the order in which managers will make their draft selections, from 1 to 15 (barring any dropouts). Managers are welcome to attend this draw. The draw will be made before the draft, to give managers a chance to plan accordingly based on where they fall in the order.
  • When the draft begins the first manager to pick will select any player of their choice from the list. Once all managers have crossed that player from their own lists, the second manager will make their selection and so on.
  • The draft will consist of 15 rounds, at the end of which, each manager will therefore have a squad of 15 players. At the end of each round, the order of selection will reverse, meaning that the 15th manager to pick in the first round will pick first in the second round, and the first will pick 15th...etc...
  • Managers are under no restrictions in terms of the number of players that they draft from a single team. Nor are they required to pick a minimum number of players of any one position. However, your selected team must play 4-4-2 (we are English after all). If you don’t have the players to fill 1 GK slot, 4 DF slots, 4 MF slots and 2 ST slots in a given week, you will simply score 0pts for that week.
    • NB: This only applies to empty slots. If you have four defenders in your squad but one of them doesn’t play because he’s done his hamstring, that’s fine.
  • Any managers unable to attend the draft have the option of their team being selected automatically by two methods:
  1. The player list will be sorted by salary, highest to lowest. Absent managers will receive the ‘next best available’ player for each other their picks, namely the player with the highest salary (which is based on the player’s points total from last season)
  2. They may re-order their copy of the player list according to their preference (eg: moving Van Persie down, Hazard up..etc..) and submit this, in which case their selections will be made according to this order rather than the default list. If you want to know how to set up your wishlist, drop us an email.
  •  Players’ salaries have no relevance to the draft. Managers may draft players of any salary, up to any total. However, if a manager ends up with a team whose total salary is above the salary cap then they will be subject to certain transfer restrictions as outlined in section 2.You will be able to make transfers throughout the season now (rather than during specific windows), so gross overspending will be easily remedied (by offloading players in a panic).
  • Each league year will commence with a draft of available players. These will consist of players dropped by managers at the end of the previous season, new signings and newly promoted players.

 Section 2: The Salary Cap
  •  The salary cap is £1400
  •  Each player has a salary value assigned to them, which will be published next to their name in the draft eligible list:
  1.  In most cases, this salary is equal in £ to the number of points they scored in last year’s Telegraph Fantasy Football competition, minus points for FA cup games.
  2. For players who were not participants in the league last year (ie new signings, promoted players who did not play in the premiership in 2011/12), their salary is calculated by multiplying their Telegraph value by 20. For instance, Olivier Giroud’s value is 6.0 – so his salary is £120. NB: managers will not have to do this calculation – just for explanatory purposes.
  • A team’s salary equals the total salary of that team’s 16 player slots at 4.30pm on each Friday during the season.
  • You may have any amount of salary committed to your team, however:
  1. Teams with salaries greater than or equal to the salary cap may only bid £0 for free agents (see section 4)
  2. Teams with salaries greater than or equal to the salary cap may trade with other teams, but the trade must result in that team bringing in equal to or less salary than it sends out. e.g: FC Supertorbombor 1983 have a total salary of £1510. They agree to trade Wayne Rooney (£212) to Frank’s Followthrough (who are under the salary cap with £1234) for Tony Hibbert (£65). Trades go through at 4pm on Friday each week, meaning that at 4.30pm FC Supertorbombor 1983 now have a total salary of £1363. If the trade went in the opposite direction, this trade would not be allowed, as FC Supertorbombor would be bringing in more salary than it was sending out. Trades made by teams over the cap do not have to result in them being under the cap, just that they end up with equal to or less salary than they started with. When teams trade multiple players with other teams, then the above rule applies to the total salary being traded. Eg, if Supertorbomber threw in Tom Huddlestone (£32) and Frank’s Followthrough added Phil Jagielka (£69) the trade would still be legal as the teams would be trading £244 for £134.

 Section 3: Your Team
  • Your team consists of 16 players – 11 starting players (1 keeper, 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 attackers) and 5 bench players of any position.
  • If you have any empty spots in your starting 11 for a given week you will score 0  points for the whole team.
  •  There are no longer any restrictions on the number of players you can have in your team from any one club.
  • Starting 11s must be named by 4pm on each Friday. Name your team by emailing tandffantasy@hotmail.co.uk, including any substitutions, with [SUBS] in the email subject line. If you want to keep the same 11 as the week before, there’s no need to send anything. Emails to Ben or Olly direct will not be accepted.
    • There will be a period over Christmas where you will have to name an 11 for several fixtures, as we can’t be bothered to administrate over the break. This will likely be a two week period with 4 or 5 sets of fixtures.
    • See the scoring section for details on how player scores are calculated.
  • You may drop a player or players from your squad by emailing tandffantasy@hotmail.co.uk with the player’s name and [DROP] in the subject line before 4pm on Friday during a game week. The player will be dropped at 4pm leaving an empty space in your squad, and your team’s salary will be recalculated at 4.30.
  • Your team needs a name – bear in mind that you’ll be keeping it for as many years as you play, unless of course you decide to spend millions on rebranding yourselves to Cardiff-Malaysia CityAirlineLuckyDragons.
Section 4: Trading and Free Agents
  • Unlike previous years, there are no transfer windows. You may trade and sign free agents in any week of the season, except over the Christmas break
  • If any manager is receiving a player into their team via trade or free agent signing, they must include instructions to that effect in their subs email. e.g. in the event of a free agent signing: “sub out Johnson for Fletcher (or Rooney if successful with my bid)”. In the event of a trade: "sub out Johnson for Fletcher (to be replaced by Podgrebnyak in trade with team X)"
  • Trades and free agent bids may only be conducted between 9 am on Monday morning and 4 pm on Friday afternoon in a given week. Emails to tandffantasy@hotmail.co.uk received outside those times will be ignored.
  • Trading:
    • Any team may trade with any other team or teams, for any number of players, as long as the trade is legal according to the salary cap rules (Section 2).
    • Multiple teams may be involved in a trade (Supertorbombor trades Wayne Rooney to Frank’s Followup, who trade Tony Hibbert to Bongo Christ, who trade Joleon Lescott to Supertorbombor)
    • Future draft picks may not be traded, and nor may salary cap space
    • To conclude a trade, one of the trading managers must email tandffantasy@hotmail.co.uk with [TRADE] in the subject line, including details of the player movements and copying in all managers participating in the trade, before 4pm on a Friday. Trades will go through before the weekend’s games.
  • Free Agents:
    • Any player not on any team roster, but registered on the Telegraph Fantasy Football website, is considered a free agent.
      • Players not appearing on the Telegraph’s lists may not be subject to bids. No more club website screenshots.
    • Managers may submit a sealed bid via email to tandffantasy@hotmail.co.uk with [BID] in the subject line, naming the player they wish to sign and bidding an amount of salary up to the total amount remaining under their salary cap, along with naming any player to drop if there is no empty slot available in their team should the bid be successful. e.g. Orange Barley Water have a salary of £1350. They may place from £0 to £50 in £1 increments on any single bid that week.
    • Managers may only submit one bid on each player per week, but may make separate bids on any number of players per week.
    • Managers whose teams are over the salary cap may only bid £0. Players dropped as part of bids do not credit their salary towards a bid – if you are over the cap, it doesn’t matter if a player you are dropping as part of the bid would take your salary under the cap – you may still only bid £0 until you are under the cap again.
    • After 4pm on Friday Ben and Olly will send out a list of successful signings after opening the sealed bids
      • Ben and Olly will not open any emails in the tandffantasy@hotmail.co.uk inbox during the week. We won’t look at sealed bids, or subs, or drops, as this would give us an unfair advantage. You’ll just have to trust us.
    • The team bidding the highest amount of salary will be awarded that player to their team. That player then joins the team with a salary equal to the winning bid.
      • In the event of a tie the bidding team that is lowest in the table will be awarded the player.
Section 5: Fees and Prizes
  • We’d really like to spread the prizes out a bit this year, and offer prizes down to 4th place in the table. In order to do this, we think it’s a good idea that people actually pay in advance of the league season, so we can guarantee that the money is there at the end, and gives everyone something to play for.
  • With 15 players paying £10 each, the split would be as follows:
    • 1st place: £80
    • 2nd place: £40
    • 3rd place: £20
    • 4th place: £10
  • As you can see, there is no league commission.
Section 6: The Close Season and New League Year
  • After prizes and celebrations are over, the following will happen in order:
    • Players on every squad will be assigned new salaries for the following season. These new salaries will be equal in £ to the number of points they scored in non-FA cup games on the Telegraph’s website.
      • NB: The amount of points they scored in your team is irrelevant: if you had Robin van Persie in your team, but left him on the bench all year while he scored 230 points in the Telegraph’s league, his salary will be 230, not 0.
    • The Salary Cap for the new league year will be announced.
    • Before the draft for the new league year, each team must drop at least 5 players. You can drop your entire squad if you really want to. Each team must also get themselves under the salary cap based on the new salaries for the forthcoming league year by dropping players.
      • This is to ensure that the more successful managers will have to make difficult decisions and drop good players into the draft eligible pool for the following season.
    • A draft will be held before the new league year, with the teams picking in reverse order of league finish in each round, until each team has 16 players.
      • NB: There will be no reversing of pick order as in the original draft. If you finished bottom of the league, you will pick first in every round.
  •  New and replacement players:
    • If you no longer want to play in the league, please let Ben and Olly know. A replacement player will inherit your squad.
    • If you know someone who is particularly keen to play, please let Ben and Olly know. We will try to fit them in as a replacement, as new players will be at a serious disadvantage otherwise.
